The Kodkod, or Guigna is another tiny cute wild cat species. In Santiago, Chile, where they can be found there is a conservation effort using injured and orphaned Kodkods to start a captive breeding program. These cats will eventually be re-released into the wild as they are strong and sound enough.
There aren’t many left!

Happy Spring! That’s what Jonquils say to me. And unlike most other flowers in the Daffodil family, they smell good too. This painting is actually longer than what you can see in the photo. There are about 4 more Jonquils that you cannot see. It’s on a sheet of 6″ x 18″ paper, just right for a landscape, or a yard full of Jonquils.
This painting is for sale $75.00 takes it home. Contact me if you would like to see this painting on your wall.
For the letter “I” I would like to introduce you to one of the rarest cats in the world. They live on a tiny Japanese Island which has been overrun with tourism, and the Iriomote cat is one of the attractions. A fatal attraction, unfortunately. It seems that most of the cats that die are hit by cars.
In Japanese it is called 西表山猫 Iriomote-yamaneko.
The Iriomote cat is a dark colored feline about the same size as a domestic cat. They live in wet lowlands and they like to fish. The recent popularity of the cat gives me hope. Here is a video of one that was hunting near a roadway. Hopefully he learned to stay away from cars.
and YOU can help:
Please call the Ministry of the Environment or send them an email (Tel.:03-3581-3351 https://www.env.go.jp/en/moemail/ ) requesting them to buy this land so the Iriomote cat can continue to exist here. Tell them that measures should be taken to protect these cats, like lower speed limits and wildlife tunnels
The habitat of the Iriomote cat is in danger of being annihilated on Iriomote Island which only has around 284 square kilometers. The Iriomote cat has nowhere else to go and its population is only 100 individuals.
One of the wonderful things about Hawaii was all the beautiful flowers that flourish there year round. The state flower of Hawaii is the yellow Hibiscus. We found, however that we liked the Hibiscus arnottianus much better, it is so striking in contrast and simplicity with its pure white petals and red stamens. The sad thing about this flower is that it has not been found in the wild for some time, as it readily crossbreeds with other hibiscus. It is actually a small tree, we saw a lovely one at the Amy Greenwell ethnobotanical garden south of Kona.
A really neat thing about this garden is that they mimicked the Hawaiian terrain by planting sea level loving plants on the lower part of the garden, and then as you move up the hill, the plantings change to show in a microcosm the ecology of the big Island of Hawaii.
I have been married for 34 years and it surprises me now just how much pleasure I get out of something so simple as a walk in the park. There is little that seems more romantic to me than this act. You walk away from your chores, your computer, television and you are freed to have some serene one-on-one time with your loved one. This scene is painted from a part of the Seattle Arboretum where the trees are ancient and shady. It can be dark and gloomy in the winter, or deliciously fresh in the summer.
One of my bigger joys this year has been the act of walking hand in hand with my husband.
What in your life brings that simple goodness?
