A Rose by any other name

“A Rose by any other name” Who said it?
I really love roses. Their intricate fat blooms full of a wonderful scent make me smile. Even the simple wild roses with their bold structures and great rose hips have a place in my heart. This is another piece of “mail art,” a simple postcard that will surely delight its recipient.

My favorite rose is Double Delight. Which is yours? If a rose doesn’t have a scent, I will not keep it in my yard. To me a rose without a scent is like an artificial piece of candy.. or a clay piece of chocolate. Or a wax fruit.

  1. What a BEAUTIFUL painting! I particularly love the background colour!

It was, of course, Shakespeare who wrote your quotation. J M Barrie (I think) rather wonderfully said “God gave us memory that we might have roses in December”.

My favourite rose is the utterly wonderful Gertrude Jekyll – the colour of a Pink Panther’s blush and with a scent that is the distillation of a whole rose garden into a single bloom. Gertie is available as both a shrub and a climber and is truly unsurpassed. I had one in the garden in England and couldn’t bring myself to uproot her to come to France. One day I’ll have one here, too!

I’m sure David Austin roses are available in the USA, so if you want to treat yourself to something wonderful, I would go to the David Austin website and order one!!

  2. I’m with you, it simply isn’t a rose if there is no scent! Cecil Brunner…it’s French, and I’m not sure if I spelled it correctly, a climbing rambler with LOTS of soft pink blooms and plenty of aroma!!
