18 – a more painterly portrait

gilbertworkshopWhile it is certain to me that the subject of this painting probably prefers the previous painting better (blue shirt), I am still learning how to do portraits, and there are some important elements in this newer one that are not the same in the previous but more accurate one, shown here:
gilbertfinasWhat I really want to do with a portrait lies something in between the two of these. Less detail and lines, more color, something a little bit freer. I painted the newer portrait in less than an hour after a 10 or 15 minute freehand sketch. I am getting to know his face.

  1. Your work is awesome. So awesome I’ve interrupted answering your wonderful letter to roam around your site for a while – now I better get back to answering you.
Thanks for writing, for painting, and for all that you do.

  2. Dear Mimi, you just keep getting better to my untrained eye. I can understand the wanting to be “freer.” I think that may mean “looser.” And I think I’d have trouble with that because while my right brain can be very creative, I have a strong left brain that’s been trained as an editor and so I can become obsessed with getting things “right.” It’s too bad really. Peace.
